Bangladesh .It is also spelled "Sandvip" both are mostly used.It is a sub-division ofChittagong District . It is situated at the estuary of theMeghna River on theBay of Bengal and separated from theChittagong coast by the Sandwip channel. It has a population of nearly 400,000. There are 15 unions in Sandwip.Sandwip is a historical island of Bangladesh.It is located at the nort-eastern side of The Bay of Bengal, nearby the main portcity of Chittagong. It is one of the most ancient islands of Bangladesh. It was ruled by different outsiders in different periods of time. Once upon a time it was an independent state ruled by Delwar Khan, then it had different rulers. Sandwip grows crops like paddy, lentils, vegetables, wheat, coconut and batel leaf.
About three hundred ships of salt per year were loaded for export from the Sandwip port. It also had a ship building industry. The then Turkish president Solaiman Demirel when he came to Chittagong in 1994 imported a gun ship from Sandwip port. Sandwip=
