The Kingdom of Nueva Galicia disappeared in 1786 to become the mayor of Guadalajara, which enabled the central government intervening in the internal affairs in general. When Mexico achieved independence on September 27, 1821, and became an Empire, the mayor of Guadalajara became the Department of Guadalajara as one of the constituent elements of the Mexican Empire. On June 23, 1823, the Department of Guadalajara, became the "Free and Sovereign State of Xalisco", to form the Federal Republic of the United Mexican States.
