Port San Antonio is a multi-purpose facility in
San Antonio, Texas established to serve as an internationalairport and industrial hub with tworailroads and close access to threeinterstate highway s. Established at the former site ofKelly Air Force Base , the convert|1900|acre|km2|sing=on facility is centrally located between thecoast s of theUnited States and along the NAFTA Corridor betweenCanada andMexico . It is a designatedForeign Trade Zone .In a 2007 study by the
University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), the port was found to employ 17, 152 workers in the San Antonio area, with an economic impact of $2.5 billion. The Boeing Company ,Lockheed Martin ,Pratt & Whitney and Standard Aero. In the planning stage is a Town Center project at the port's center which would offer office space as well as provide retail, dining and housing options.Transportation
Operated in joint use with
Lackland Air Force Base , adjacent to the airport,Kelly Field hosts an convert|11500|ft|m|sing=on runway and offers engine testing facilities. The railroad at Port San Antonio is served byUnion Pacific andBurlington Northern Santa Fe .Town Center
The Port San Antonio Town Center project is to be constructed on a convert|200|acre|km2 plot in the middle of the facility. It is intended to provide office space to businesses and to offer dining and retail opportunities for employees of the Port's tenants. It is also intended to include residential space. The area currently hosts a 1940s office building and an convert|80|acre|km2 area of existing
bungalow s used in the 1920s to houseAir Force personnel. Port San Antonio expects to begin development in 2010.References
