RV Pacific Escort I (T-AGOR-26)

RV "Pacific Escort I" (T-AGOR-26) – previously known as U.S. Army USAT "LT-535" – was an Army tugboat acquired by the U.S. Navy in 1985 as an escort for submarines and as a for-hire oceanographic research ship at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

She had been in service with the U.S. Army since 1944 when she was commissioned as the "LT-535", a U.S. Army "377-A"-class large tug. She was placed in service with the U.S. Navy in 1985, performing her duties with the Navy until finally struck at an unknown date and disposed of.

Built in Orange, Texas

"LT 535" was built by Levingston Shipbuilding of Orange, Texas, during 1943-1944. Her launch date is not known, but she was delivered to the Army during the first half of 1944 and commissioned as the "LT-535".

U.S. Army career

Her World War II and subsequent career is not known other than she remained in service with the Army from 1945 to 1984.

U.S. Navy career

When acquired by the U.S. Navy in 1985, she was renamed "Pacific Escort". Essentially a large tugboat-type vessel, she was placed into service as an escort for American submarines. She was based at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, in California, and was available for lease to commercial interests as a general research ship.

Inactivation

"Pacific Escort" was struck from the Navy List at an unknown date and disposed of by the Navy. She is believed to be still in commercial service.
