Solex College is a post-secondary institution that offers certification, pre-license, associate degree and diploma programs to educate students for technical and occupational careers or to develop vocational knowledge.
School History
Solex Computer Academy was authorized in 1995 to operate through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and Private Business and Vocational Schools unit, to train students in information technology. Solex Computer Academy later evolved into Solex Academy, with a wider selection of courses for students, including: Massage therapy, an English as a Second Language program, basic nursing assistant training, and a number of computer and business technology courses.
Under Federal Law, Solex Academy was authorized in 2001 to enroll nonimmigrant alien students. Presently, there are over a thousand foreign students at Solex College from more than 25 countries. Solex is also a member of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP), employs four members of the Association of International Educators (NAFSA), and is an approved testing site for ETS® TOEFL.
Given permission by ISBE, the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, Division of Banks and Real Estate, and by the Illinois Department of Public Health, Solex Academy expanded its list of offerings in subsequent years to medical programs and real estate.
With regard to its medical programs, in 2004 Solex Academy became affiliated with the National Health Career Association and was officially approved as a testing site for certification exams in Electrocardiography, Phlebotomy, Patient Care Technician Medical Billing and Coding, Medical Assisting, among others.
In 2004, Solex's advisory committee decided to separate the technology and medical programs and formed Solex Medical Academy.
Solex Medical Academy is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education to offer a Medical Massage Therapy program, accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) in April 2006. The Academy was also granted Title IV funding approval by the United State Department of Education in April 2007. In December 2007, Solex Academy was given degree granting authority by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) to award an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Accounting. The school was renamed Solex College in that same month, with its first degree seeking students enrolling in the spring semester of 2008.
