Deal.org is a crime prevention program administered by the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) based inOttawa, Canada . It is run as a for-youth, by-youth web-based program that operates under the principles of [http://www.ccsd.ca/cpsd/ccsd/ crime prevention through social development] by providing information to youth about issues affecting them in their personal, family and community lives. The deal.org Program was created in 1997 by an RCMP officer and four high school students from Ottawa. The acronym “deal” originally stood for “Drug Education and Awareness for Life”; the initial goal of the program was to be a drug information resource [ [http://www.deal.org/content/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=795&Itemid=967 deal.org celebrates its 10th anniversary] ] . Since then, the program has grown and now covers many issues affecting youth, including
violence , e-literacy,pop culture ,mental health anddiscrimination .In 2002, deal.org’s French counterpart – choix.org – was created. Programs
The Webzine
deal.org’s
webzine is published monthly and contains articles written by youth. The articles range from essays, to poetry, to stories of personal experience. The program has writers on staff but also publishes external submissions from youth across Canada.The Knowzone
The Knowzone is deal.org’s digital library of fact sheets. Topics covered include
drugs ,diversity ,health andviolence . Other fact sheets give advice about things like how to write a resume or apply for a scholarship. Each fact sheet provides information about the specific topic as well as links to further information and resources.The Toolbox
The Toolbox is a collection of ready-made presentations which can be used by police officers, teachers, community workers and young people themselves. Topics covered include relationship safety,
youth gangs , e-literacy,bullying andimpaired driving . Each presentation includes a presenter’s script, icebreaker games and activities.External Links
