May 15 1608 –September 23 1642 ) was a Frenchmissionary and the firstNorth American martyrs of theRoman Catholic Church .He was baptized in St-Martin-du-Bois near
Angers ,France in 1608 on the 15th of May. He volunteered to work with theJesuits in the hospitals ofQuebec . In 1642, he travelled to theHuron missions inNew York with FatherIsaac Jogues . He was captured by theIroquois as a French Military Spy and tortured. After teaching the native children thesign of the cross , he was killed by a tomahawk blow to the head near the current site ofAuriesville, New York .He was
canonized on29 June 1930 byPope Pius XI along with seven otherCanadian Martyrs . He is thepatron saint of anesthetists.Fordham University has a student dormitory named after Rene Goupil at its Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx, New York .ee also
