Conference of the Birds (book)

Conference of the Birds (book)

Conference of the Birds is a book by John Heilpern[1]. It describes a journey by theatrical director Peter Brook and a group of actors, including Helen Mirren, across the desert of Northwest Africa. The journey formed part of an attempt by Brook to develop a form of theatre which did not depend on the cultural assumptions of the audience.

The point of the journey was to test forms of theatre, devised by Brook and the group at the Centre International de Recherche Théâtrale, by performing them to native groups with whom the actors shared neither language nor culture. One of the pieces performed was based on the Persian poem Conference of the Birds.
