History of the Lions
Over the past 4 years, the Leyden Lions have demonstrated an excellence on and off the field of play. Recognized as one of the premier teams in minor league/semi-pro football, the Lions are proven winners and strong members of the community. The team’s lifetime record is 38-20 with trips to the post-season in all 4 seasons.
Established in 2004, the Lions began play under Owner/Head Coach Jose Rodriguez. In their first year of existence, the Lions experienced a great deal of success by winning the 2004 Tri-State Football League Championship with an undefeated league record of 11-0 and an overall record of 15-4. They advanced to the championship game of the National Tournament where they were defeated by the Belleville Justice 21-10.
In 2005, the Lions joined the Mid-States Football League, where they continued to have success in their second season by advancing to the semi-finals where they lost to eventual champion Chicago Thunder.
During the 2006 season, the Lions struggled with new players in several key positions. The finished with a record of 6-7, losing in the first round of the MSFL playoffs to eventual AA National Champion Chicago Thunder.
During the 2007 season, the Lions once again found success by rolling to a 10-3 record and another trip to the MSFL playoffs. Once again the Lions stumbled in the opening round, losing to the Racine Threat 30-27.
