Overview
Sunday
2 August ,1903 was the date of the 1901 All-Ireland senior hurling final between London and Cork. It was their first meeting in the history of the championship. London were appearing in their second consecutive championship decider after losing to Tipperary in1900 . Cork were lining out in the All-Ireland final for the first time since1894 when the defeated Dublin to take the title.Match report
The London players may have been excused if they gave a below par performance during the game due to their travel arrangements. They traveled by boat over night and only arrived in Ireland on the morning of the game and not on the Saturday evening as was planned. In spite of this their game was not affected. Cork won the toss and played with the wind for the opening thirty minutes as rain severely hampered the game. From the second match referee John McCarthy threw in the sliothar Cork went on the attack.
Jack Coughlan played a captain’s role for London as he repelled the Cork offensive with a long puck to touch. From the resultant line ball the Londoners came back and got a point inside a minute. Both sides had some tough exchanges over the next period before Cork equalized. Cork took the lead soon afterwards; however, play was suspended for a short period when a London player received an injury. On resumption the exiles gained possession and parity was restored when they tapped over a point. At the interval both sides were level with 0-2 apiece. The second-half saw some great individual displays by both sets of players, however, the London team were sharper. With five minutes left the result was still in the balance. The exiles stormed ahead and scored the winning goal. Cork had no answer and at the long whistle they were the champions by 1-5 to 0-4. After the match the London captain was chaired off the field and was again chaired from the dressing-room to his hotel in the city. With the victory going to a London team comprised of nine Cork men, four Limerick men, 2 Clare men and one each from Kerry and Tipperary, the All-Ireland title went abroad for the first, and only, time in the history of the championship.tatistics
