Peter Gregson is a cellist specializing in the performance of new music and is in demand for unique concert presentations and his embracing of new performance tools and spaces.

He has appeared on BBC 1,2,3 and 4 and was featured in Howard Goodall's series, How Music Works on Channel 4. In September 2008, he was nominated for the "Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award".

Biography

As the cellist on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s revolutionary Hyperbow project, a member of Tod Machover’s HyperInstrument group, he collaborated with the Royal Academy of Music and MIT on this revolutionary instrument. The project was also documented on CD and DVD, and will be released in Autumn 2008.

He has worked with and premiered works by Martin Suckling, Patrick Nunn, Monica Max West, Artem Vassiliev, Milton Mermikides, Joby Talbot, Howard Goodall, Richard Sisson, John Metcalfe, Philip Sheppard, Thomas Hewitt Jones, Aaron Holloway-Nahum, Nigel Morgan and Max Richter.

During February and March 2008, he was in residence at the Banff Centre in Canada recording his debut award winning CD, SPEM. Featuring five new works alongside the first solo cello recording of Thomas Tallis’s 40 part motet, Spem in Alium, the CD was released at a sell-out showcase concert at Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh on April 25th, and was simultaneously broadcast online to an audience across the world.

Peter plays a 1987 Colin Irving acoustic cello, a blue five string electric cello made for him by Eric Jensen and uses Eclipse Speakers. He is the co-founder of cutting-edge production company, CoffeeLoop

Concerts and Albums

His debit album, SPEM, produced by Gregson and Milton Mermikides and mastered by Drew Lavyne, received critical acclaim, not only for the music but also the artwork which was created by Josh Leigh. It has been selected to appear in Spin, a visual history of groundbreaking record design over the past forty years.

In June 2005, he presented thebluecello, a sell out showcase concert featuring commissions from Howard Goodall, Richard Sisson and the first synthesizing electric cello concert by Thomas Hewitt Jones.

Tours

He will be touring SPEM across America and into Japan over the 2008/09 season, sponsored by Fujitsu / Eclipse Speakers. They will visit Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Osaka.
