She is probably best known for playing the character ofNatalie Marlowe on the daytime drama "All My Children " — a role she originated in 1985.Collins ended up leaving "All My Children" for personal reasons. The role of Natalie was recast with
Melody Anderson . The new actress proved to be unpopular, resulting in the character getting "killed off" onscreen on June 22, 1993 in a car accident. Collins returned to the show in 1997, 1998 and 2001, where she made brief appearances as Natalie (in "angel " form).Collins also played the role of Natalie's mentally ill sister, Janet Green, starting in 1991. Both characters (Natalie and Janet) were popular with the audience, and later the Janet Green character was played by
Robin Mattson until Collins returned in the role she originated.In addition to her soap work, Collins guest starred on the series "
L.A. Law ", and co-hosted "Good Morning America " in 1989, where she substituted for regular hostJoan Lunden . She has performed in numerous plays, including "Doubles" on Broadway.Raised in
Washington D.C. , her father isastronaut Michael Collins, who served as Command Module Pilot on the historicApollo 11 mission (the firstMoon landing ) in 1969. Kate married husband Charles Newell, who is the Artistic Director of the Court Theatre inChicago , in October 1992. The couple have two sons together.Collins continues to act in theater work. She returned to "All My Children" as Janet in 2005 and was featured in a prominent storyline which aired into 2006. She again returned to the show as Janet on
