Overview
Sunday
3 November was the date of the 1889 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Dublin and Clare. It was their first ever meeting in the history of the All-Ireland championship.Match report
At the allotted time match referee Patrick Tobin threw in the sliothar and the game began. Tobin’s choice as referee was an unusual one. He was the honorary secretary of the Dublin County Committee and, as such, his native county was participating in the final. There were no objections from any of the Clare team as the game was played in a sporting spirit in front of 1,500 spectators. As was common at the time the Clare team played in their bare feet and led by 1-5 to 1-0 at half-time. Heavy rain caused the field to become slippery and, in spite being strewn with sawdust, this spoiled the match. The second half was a goal-fest for the Dublin team. At the final whistle the score read 5-1 to 1-6 in Dublin’s favour.
W.J. Spain scored three goals for ‘the Dubs’ to become the first dual All-Ireland medalist.tatistics
