Jean Chatzky is a financial expert who is also an award-winning journalist, best-selling author and motivational speaker. She is the editor-at-large for ‘Money Magazine’ and serves as AOL's official Money Coach. She is the financial editor for NBC's Today Show and often hosts a series of money minutes, "Talking Money with Jean Chatzky", on CNBC. Chatzky appears often on numerous TV shows, giving personal finance advice.

Biography

Career

Starting her career in 1986 at Working Woman, Chatzky soon rose to assistant editor. In 1989 she joined the equity research department of Dean Witter Reynolds, returning to journalism two years later as a reporter/researcher at Forbes. She moved to the Dow Jones/Hearst start-up SmartMoney in 1992, rising from staff writer to senior editor. After a five-year run, Chatzky joined Money Magazine, the nation’s largest financial publication, in 1998.

Currently serving as the editor-at-large for Money Magazine, and writing the back page column of the magazine, Chatzky also writes regular personal finance columns for Time magazine and USA Weekend. Chatzky is the host of a series of "Money" minutes—“Talking Money With Jean Chatzky”—on CNBC, and has appeared on Live With Regis and Kelly, The View and numerous other programs. She has written for New York magazine, Parents, Seventeen, and Cosmopolitan and was a staff writer for SmartMoney, Forbes, and Working Woman.

Chatzky is also the financial editor for NBC’s Today Show, a contributing editor for More Magazine, a columnist for The New York Daily News, a contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show and a featured money coach on Oprah's "Debt Diet" series. She also hosts a daily show on the Oprah & Friends channel, exclusively on XM Radio.

She is the author of four books: Make Money, Not Excuses (March 2008), Pay It Down: From Debt to Wealth on $10 A Day (January 2006), The Ten Commandments of Financial Happiness (January 2005), and Talking Money (January 2001). The book, Pay It Down, was a New York Times and Business Week best seller, and her latest book, Make Money, Not Excuses is a Wall Street Journal and New York Times Bestseller.

Personal life

Born in Michigan and raised in Wisconsin, Indiana and West Virginia, Chatzky holds a BA in Englishfrom the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Westchester County, New York with her two children. She is divorced.

In addition to her professional work, Chatzky is on the March of Dimes advisory council, on the Board of Directions of the Briarcliff Manor Education Foundation, lends her support and expertise to women's services groups and is on the board of the Nora Magid Mentorship prize at the University of Pennsylvania, which helps journalism students get a head-start in the field. She is also on the Communications Committee for University of Pennsylvania.

Awards and recognition

Chatzky has been recognized as an exceptional journalist. She received the Clarion Award for magazine columns from the Association of Woman in Communications in 2002, and her radio show received a Gracie Award from the American Women in Radio and Television - The Gracies. She has also been nominated twice for National Magazine Awards and was named one of the country’s best magazine columnists by the Chicago Tribune in 2003.
