Port-la-Joye—Fort Amherst is a National Historic Site in Canada commemorating the location's double distinction in hosting both the oldest permanent European settlement on Prince Edward Island and the first military fortification on the island to be built by the British.
Port la Joye was first settled by French Acadians in 1720. In 1758, the British seized control of the port and replaced its initial fort with a new one, Fort Amherst.
