Playing career
A product of the renowned
Glasgow youth team Drumchapel Amateurs, McColl began his senior career with Clydebank, and was a member of the squad that won the inaugural Second Division title in 1975-76 before surprisingly going on to reach the Premier Division a year later, the first time the club had appeared in the top flight of Scottish football. He would make over 150 Scottish League appearances in the Clydebank midfield before a transfer to Ayr United in 1978.In 1981 McColl joined Clyde and won another Second Division championship medal, under Craig Brown in season 1981-82. His last senior club was Albion Rovers in 1983 where he made just a single league appearance before retiring.
