Zhu Zhaoxiang (
Chinese : 朱兆祥), aka Zhao-xiang Zhu, is aChinese engineer ,educator and the main pioneer of explosive mechanics in modern China. Zhu was the 1stPresident ofNingbo University .Biography
Feb 4, 1921, Zhu was born in
Zhenhai County (current Zhenhai District),Ningbo ,Zhejiang Province . Both of his father and grandfather were fishmen. 1949, Zhu graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering,Zhejiang University . In the early 1940s, Zhu joined theCommunist Party of China (CPC). From 1944 to 1949, Zhu was a lecturer and assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering, Zhejiang University.1957, because of his right-side political views and words, Zhu was expelled from CPC. Zhu was reaccepted and rejoined the party in
Deng Xiaoping 's era. From 1959 to 1988, Zhu taught mechanics at theUniversity of Science and Technology of China (USTC); he was a lecturer, associate professor, professor, and the leader of explosive mechanics research at USTC, chronologically. From 1985 to 1988, Zhu served as the first President of Ningbo University, Ningbo. Since 1989, Zhu continued his position at the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sicences as a senior researcher.The "Tsien Case"
Zhu was one of the key people who played an important role in the return of
Tsien Hsue-shen fromUnited States to the newly foundedPeople's Republic of China . 1955, Zhu met Tsien and his family (including his wife JIANG Ying and their son and daughter) inHong Kong . He accompanied Tsien toBeijing , to meet with the communist leaders including the chairmanMao Zedong .Zhu helped Tsien to establish the Institute of Mechanics under the
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Zhu also helped the setup of Chinese Mechanical Society (中国力学会).ee Also
