Ranipet (Ranipettai in Tamil) is a locality and part of Vellore city in the state of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. It is a medium-sized community located about 26 kilometers from vellore city center and 100 kilometers from Chennai, the fourth largest urban area in India. It is a main junction in the Chennai-Bangalore road. It is an example of serious groundwater pollution by heavy metals

The locality is situated on the eastern wing of Vellore city, on the northern bank of river Palar.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Ranipettai had a population of 47,236. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Ranipettai has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 74%. In Ranipettai, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Industry

There are a number of large and mediam scale Leather industries making finished Leathers and Leather articals like shoes and garments for export. And there are other small scale industries in Ranipet mostly engaged in chemical, leather and tool making. These industries are the major lifeline for otherwise dry, uncultivatable land. The Boiler Auxiliaries Plant (BAP) of BHEL [Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited] , a major Federal Government owned enterprise is situated in the town.
