The 37th Engineer Battalion dates back to World War I, first activated as a Electrical and Mechanical Engineer Battalion on 16 January, 1918 as the 1st Battalion, 37th Engineer Regiment. During [World War I] , the battalion served in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Campaigns as part of American Expeditionary Force. The 37th Engineer Regiment was deactivated in March, 1919. The 37th Engineer Regiment was reactivated in January, 1941. On 18 March, 1943, after training in several locations in the United States, the regiment was divided into the 1106th Engineer Combat Group, the 209th Engineer Battalion (CBT)(ABN), and the 37th Engineer Battalion (CBT)(Amphibious). The 37th Engineer Battalion was assigned to the 5th Special Engineer Brigade and particpated in
Operation Overlord . The Battalion landed with the assault waves onOmaha Beach . For its performance, the Battalion was awarded thePresidential Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm. For this, the battalion received the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Later, the battalion moved through Belgium and Holland supporting the Allied advance with bridging, road clearing, and other engineering missions. The battalion entered Germany in March, 1945 where it remained until its return to the United States in November, 1945. In December 1945, the battalion was again deactivated.
On 28 October 1954, the battalion was redesignated the 37th Engineer Battalion (Combat) and activated on 17 December 1954 in Germany. The battalion was again deactivated on 31 December 1958 in Germany
On 16 August 1987, the 37th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Airborne) was reactivated at Fort Bragg, NC as part of the 20th Engineer Brigade. On 13 October 1990 the battalion deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operations
Desert Shield andDesert Storm . On 27 September 1994, the 37th Engineer Battalion deployed to the island ofHaiti in support of Operation Uphold Democracy.On 11 May 2001, elements of the Battalion deployed to Kosovo to participate in Operation Joint Guardian. The Eagles were attached to the 11th Engineer Battalion and supported the 101st Airborne Division (C)(AASLT). While in Kosovo, the Company team performed many combat construction missions.
On 22 September 2002, the 37th Engineer Battalion deployed 20 Vertical and LE soldiers to Kuwait to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where they supported the Combined Joint Task Force at Camp Doha. The Eagles redeployed to Fort Bragg on 22 March 2003. Every soldier deployed received a Joint Service medal and the Joint Meritorious Unit Citation for permanent wear.
On 22 March 2003, the 37th Engineer Battalion deployed to Northern Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battalion supported the 101st Airborne Division (C)(AASLT). The battalion constructed an airfield in Irbil, conducted airfield repairs at Q-West, conducted highway construction, demolition reduction operations in the V Corps Iraqi ASP, and participated in quality of life projects to help deployed soldiers. For its actions in Iraq, the Battalion received the Meritorious Unit Commendation (1st Oak Leaf Cluster).
On 10 March 2006, the 37th Engineer Battalion deployed to Afghanistan in support of the Global War on Terrorism serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The Battalion was based out of FOB Sharana in support of Combined/Joint Task Force 76, 10th Mountain Division and formed Task Force Eagle, the first US, Joint and Coalition Engineer Task Force in the CJOA. The battalion executed daily airfield and security operations on FOB Sharana, constructed over 200 KM of improved roads, built or expanded five Forward Operating Bases, and cleared over 10,000 KM of routes in the eastern and southern regions of Afghanistan. The battalion was engaged by the Taliban and enemy forces during IED strikes and ambushes on numerous occasions. During these attacks, the battalion was credited with over 105 enemy killed in action. The battalion redeployed back to Ft Bragg on 11 March, 2007.
