Summer Bioinformatics program

= Background =

A summer Research program in Bioinformatics Department of NYU.Poly is venture initiated to foster the Graduate students for the industry centered skills. There is always a huge gap between the Academic training and industry requirements. The 12 week Research program is designed to bridge that gap by providing the students an opportunity to work closely with faculty whose expertise is closely related to the students' academic interests and career goals. In general, every Research program has two folds- one on the side of the instructor or advisor and the other on the side of the students. The members of the group are ambitious graduate students. Specifically, the program offers students the opportunity to gain real-time problem solving ability, explore their career and academic opportunities. Goals

As an educational institution, NYU poly thrives on its students and faculty diversity as well as its ability to address the technological and scientific issues faced by the industry at large. Given the unique relationship of both bioinformatics and computational biology among the various industrial sectors , our program focuses on.Creating students who will be well versed in PERL,MySql and LINUX.Designing and managing a webpage and a wiki site.•Successfully create relational database that will deal with and integrate multiple data types, extract as well as store information onto the database and more.

Through guided and coordinated activity, the summer program provides the participants master important unique skills in the realm of bioinformatics & computational biology and contribute to projects that are a vital part of the academic experience and a realistic foundation for industrial experience. The program currently holds 6 graduate Bioinformatics student .The advisor is thus able to gear the program with individual attention to each of the students. This makes the program unique compared to other summer Research program by providing many opportunities for team building along with culturally and socially enriching activities while being exposed to industry level hands-on research in a one-on-one relationship with the experts.

Project Design

The project involves developing a tool to compute the similarity and identity of the given sequence. The Smith waterman algorithm will be used for this tool. The perl scripts (with Catalyst) will be used for this project. The Entire Perl scripts will be broken-down into subroutines and each student will be responsible for one subroutine. In this manner every participant will have their own contribution to the tool, making it a perfect the team work.

Students Involved

Ramya Thulasingam.

Ramya Thulasingam a Graduate student in bioinformatics. She likes herself to be called as “Perl scripter”. A versatile student with able problem solving ability. Her main interest lies in Genomics. She is also involved in another project in Human genetics Lab in Newyork medical center in Cancer Data analysis using R programming language.
