William II, marquis of Namur

William II, marquis of Namur

William II, marquis of Namur (22 January 1355 - 10 January 1418) inherited the marquisate of Namur from his father William I in 1391 and held it until his own death. His mother was Catherine of Savoy. His rule as marquis was a peaceful one, in which he devoted himself to encouraging commerce, industry and the building of fortifications.

His first wife was Jeanne of Hainaut (1323 † 1350), countess of Soissons, daughter of John of Hainaut, lord of Beaumont and his wife Marguerite, countess of Soissons. On Jeanne's death, he remarried in 1352 to Catherine of Savoy († 1388), daughter of Louis II of Savoy, baron of Vaud, and his wife Isabella of Châlon. Catherine gave birth to William's only child, a daughter, who died young. His third marriage, in 1384 to Marie (daughter of Robert I of Bar), was childless and so on his death William II was succeeded as marquis by his brother John III.
