Abhijit Banerjee

Abhijit Banerjee

Abhijit Banerjee (born 1961) is an Indian economist, currently the the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to joining MIT, he taught at Harvard and Princeton.

Originally from Kolkata, he attended the University of Calcutta and Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) prior to obtaining a Ph.D. in Economics at Harvard University.

Much of his work focuses on development economics, with both theoretical and applied contributions. Together with Esther Duflo, Michael Kremer, Jeff Carpenter, John List and Sendhil Mullainathan, he has been a driving force in advancing field experiments as an important methodology to discover causal relationships in economics.
