Michael Martin (polygraph examiner)

Michael Martin (polygraph examiner)

R. Michael Martin, a world-renowned polygraph examiner from 1984 to the present, was known as the "Lie Detector Guy" from 1996 to 2004 for his work on numerous television programs such as 20/20, 48 Hours (TV series), WNBC News, and for numerous talk shows including Judge Mills Lane, Sally Jessy Raphael, The Ricki Lake Show, Maury Povich Show and Morton Downey Jr. More recently, Martin provided exams for Sci-Fi Channel's Proof Positive and Discovery Channel's Mythbusters (see below).

In episode 109 [http://dsc.discovery.com/video/?playerId=203711706&categoryId=210013704&lineupId=229524134&titleId=1334372822 see video clip] of the popular science show Mythbusters, staff members attempted to fool the polygraph by using pain to try and increase the readings when answering truthfully (so the machine will supposedly interpret the truthful and non-truthful answers as the same.) They also attempted to fool the polygraph by thinking happy thoughts when lying and thinking stressful thoughts when telling the truth to try and confuse the machine. However, neither technique was successful and Martin correctly identified each guilty and innocent subject.

Martin holds memberships in the American Polygraph Association, the Pennsylvania Polygraph Examiner's Association, the Maryland Polygraph Association, the Iowa Polygraph Society, the British and European Polygraph Association, the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Better Business Bureau, and he is certified as a Post-Conviction Sex Offender Examiner. Martin has also been certified as a court-approved polygraph expert and is approved to provide testing for the U.S. Government.

Martin operates the Global Polygraph Network, a referral service for polygraph experts.

High profile cases

Martin tested three individuals suspected by the local Sheriff's Department of being involved with the Columbine High School Massacre. All three individuals were cleared of involvement with NDI (no deception indicated) polygraph results.

Martin tested convicted murderer Patricia Rorrer in connection with the Joann Katrinak homicide case. Rorrer was attempting to have her conviction overturned, but the polygraph results clearly indicated DI (deception indicated) to Rorrer's involvement in the crime.

Martin tested Robert Chambers cellmate in connection with the Preppie murder Case of Jennifer Levin. The cellmate alleged that Chambers had made a "jailhouse confession" to him about intentionally killing Levin, but the polygraph indicated DI (deception indicated) to Chambers having made this statement.
