Saul B. Newton (1906-December 21, 1991) was a controversial
psychotherapist who ran an unorthodox commune in New York City known as the "Sullivanians."He founded the group, often described in the press as a cult, after his departure from the
William Alanson White Institute in New York in 1957, several years after the death ofHarry Stack Sullivan , the institute's founder. His original family name was Cohen. He grew up inSt. John's, New Brunswick , and attended theUniversity of Wisconsin . He later went on to Chicago where he associated with radical circles at theUniversity of Chicago , prior to serving with theAbraham Lincoln Brigade in theSpanish Civil War . He fought with the U.S. Army inWorld War II , and studied psychotherapy after the war. He was married and divorced six times.References
