Robert S. Wood (born
December 25 ,1936 ) has been ageneral authority ofThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) since 1999. Prior to this, he was the holder of the Chester W. Nimitz Chair of National Security at theUnited States Naval War College in Newport,Rhode Island .Wood was born in Idaho Falls,
Idaho . From 1957 to 1959, he was anLDS Church missionary in the French Mission of the church. After his mission, he received abachelor's degree in history fromStanford University and master's andPh.D. inpolitical science fromHarvard University . In addition to teaching the Naval War College, Wood has held faculty positions atHarvard University ,Bentley College , theUniversity of Virginia , theUniversity of Tilburg and theUniversity of Groningen .Prior to his call as a general authority, Wood had been an
area seventy ,regional representative of the Twelve ,stake president , and a bishop in the LDS Church. He became a general authority in April 1999 when he was asked to join theSecond Quorum of the Seventy at the church's general conference inSalt Lake City ,Utah .Wood in married to Dixie Leigh Jones; they are the parents of four children.
