"Elvis and the Blue Moon Conspiracy" (2003), by Mark McGinty, tells the satirical story of the 1969 moon landing, where Elvis Presley accompanies astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the lunar surface and becomes the first man to walk on the moon. An accident on the surface causes NASA to abort the mission and broadcast a version of the landing without Elvis, later dubbed a "hoax" by a little known reporter named Dani Mitchell. Elvis is replaced by an impersonator named Jimmy Orr who lives out the rest of Presley's life.

Literary significance and reception

The reviews of "Elvis and the Blue Moon Conspiracy" were mixed. Nigel Patterson of the Elvis Information Network describes the novel as: "an entertaining book which provides a fresh and innovative approach to Elvis' fictional adventures." [http://www.elvis.com.au] | date = Dec 9, 2003] Robert Barclay of Midwest Book Review calls it: "a wonderful romp in never-land. The whole idea of Elvis on the moon is patently absurd, but the author has peppered his story with enough real facts to make you want to believe it. The reader will enjoy meeting a wide variety of delightfully crazy characters. This is definitely entertaining. I give it high marks for originality. [http://www.midwestbookreview.com | date = Feb, 2004] However, in Gregory L. Reese's , in which the book is classified as speculative fiction, Reese states that the book: "end up neither as funny as it thinks it is or as it could have been."
