International Student Film Festival (Belgrade)

The International Student Film Festival (FSF) is the first and only student film festival in Serbia. It was founded in Belgrade in 1999 by students of production and it has been entirely organized by students ever since. It is a cultural event that presents live action, documentary, animated and experimental short films from over the world. It includes workshops and seminars for the participating students and guests. Over the past 9 years more than 900 films from 40 countries have been screened at the Festival. FSF had been recognized and recommended by CILECT in 2001.

History

April 20 – 23, 1999

The First Festival was opened in 1999 by Slobodan Šijan, serbian director and film direction professor, during the NATO bombing, in the hall of Museum of Yugoslav Film Archive. The Festival screened short films made by students from Serbia, Macedonia, Mexico and Estonia.

October 27 – November 1, 2000

During the 2nd International Student Film Festival, Museum of Yugoslav Film Archive was again the place for student interaction, short student films and film enthusiasts.

October 26 – 31, 2001

The 3rd International Student Film Festival took place in the Museum of Yugoslav Film Archive and in the youth center Dom Omladine. More than 200 films from 15 countries were screened within Competitive Program and an Open Studio Program. Festival awards were presented by jury: Serbian film director Ivan Stefanović, a film student Ivan Karl and Dejan Krajačić, film critic. Antipirat Award, named after a magazine, was awarded by Dimitrije Vojnov and Aleksandar Radivojević, representatives of the magazine.

*Antipirat Award: "Who Is Who?", dir: Marko Malzea, Germany.
*Midnight Cinema Award by radio BG 202: "Night in a Hotel", dir: Blaža Švenk, Slovenia.
*Audience Award: "Gandor – Hunting on Nirdal", dir: Jovan Todorović, Serbia.

October 25 – 31, 2002

The Fourth FSF was opened by Serbian director Dušan Makavejev in the Museum of Yugoslav Film Archive. More than 160 student films from 28 countries were screened. Part of the Festival was held in the French Cultural Centre and the Faculty of Dramatic Arts. The Festival organised two Workshops: "Working with Film Actors" by Judit Weston from USA, and "Film Production Workshop" by Čedomir Kolar, producer of Academy Award Winning ¨No Man's Land". Members of the jury were Eduardo Talavini, Mickey Zilberstein and Dejan Karajačić.

*Special Award: "The Mechanism", dir: David Sakup, Czech Republic.
*Yugoslav Film Archive Award: "Životna priča", dir: Christian Namesku, Romania.
*Midnight Cinema Award by radio BG 202: "Projection", dir: Angel Apostolski, Bulgaria.
*Audience Award: "Vojcek's Last Simphony", dir: Nikolaj Arcel, Denmark.
*Best Festival Selection: Film School from Denmark.
*Best Films of the Region: "Orgasmus", dir: Dražen Stader, Slovenia & "Hu, A Man As An Army", dir: Jovan Todorović, Serbia.

October 24 – 30, 2003

The 5th International Student Film Festival was opened by director Emir Kusturica and had screened more than 150 short films. Festival selector was Ivan Karl; there were sevaral selections: Documentary Program, Index Europe, Serbian and Regional Selection. The Festival organised creative workshops by director Lordan Zafranović, sound designer Lary Sider from UK and french director of photography Bruno Nilten. Members of jury were: Vladimir Paskaljević, Stefan Arsenijević (film students from Serbia) and Marko Simić (FAMU, Prague).
*Best Picture: "Sosiete anonume", France & "Progulka", Russia.
*Best Direction: "Kostolov", Slovakia & "Procession", Slovakia.
*Best Film of the Region: "An Old Man And The Sea", Bulgaria.
*Best Festival Selection: VKIG, Russia.
*Best Female Performance: Dijana Skondrić for "Mora", BIH.
*Best Male Performance: Slobodan Perišić for "Igra istine", BIH.
*Special Award: "Ce sera", Slovenia.
*Award For Best Work With Actors: "Sole", Italy.

October 22 - 26, 2004

The Sixth FSF was opened by director Srđan Dragojević. Marko Simić, film director, was Festival Selector; more than 80 films from 25 countries within four selections were screened: Competitive, Regional, Panorama and a Long Student Film Selection. Jury members were Dalibor Matanić, director from Croatia, serbian director Jovan Todorović and Dragan Jovićević, journalist from Serbia.

*Special Award: "Story About Alcohol", dir: Jonas Embring, Sweden.
*Special Award: "Antiportrait", dir: Francesco Amato, Italy.
*Special Award: "Tokio", dir: Aleks Rademakers, Spain.
*Audience Award for Best film of the Region: "The End of the Game", dir: Petar Orešković, Croatia.
*Audience Award for Best Foreign Film: "Oscar", dir: Guro Ekholmen, Norway.
*Yugoslav Film Archive Award: "My Grandfather's Hat", dir: Julia Zakia Orandi, Brazil.

December 13 – 16, 2005

Serbian Director Srdan Golubović opened the seventh Festival in Museum of Yugoslav Film Archive. Screened films, selected by Bogdan Petković (producer and founder of FSF) and director and producer Jovan Todorović were presented within two selections: Competitive and Panorama – non-competitive selection. Jury members were: Joscha Douma, director from Germany, playwriter Vuk Pavlović and Milorad Glušica, director of photografy and camera professor from Serbia.

*Special Award: "Summer Clouds", dir: Aleks Danielson, Sweden.
*Yugoslav Film Archive Award: "Cuban" & "Good Morning, co-worker", dir: Rastko Petrović, Serbia.
*Nagrada Ponoćnog bioskopa radija 202: "The Great Franz", dir: Christian Schwochow, Germany.
*Audience Award: "King Konrad", dir: Daniel Walentin, Sweden.
*Best Photography: "Diving", dir: Robert Vukajlo, Bulgaria.

October 20 - 23, 2006

The 8th Student Film Festival presented 54 films from 19 countries within two selections: Main Program and Panorama – non-competitive program. FSF presented films from Germany, Italy, Canada, Switzerland, Kenya, Slovenia, Taiwan, USA, Slovakia, Norway, Argentina, Czech Republic, Serbia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Singapore, Great Britain and Israel. Selectors were serbian film director Oleg Novković and screenwriter Milena Marković. Festival organised two workshops: "Screenplay Workshop" by Charles Alverson, co-screenwriter of "Jabberwocky" and "Animation Workshop" by Jelena Bešir, director of animated films. Members of international jury were: Carlo Varini, director of photography in film "The Deep Blue", Stevan Filipović director and editor of film "Sheitan's Warrior" and Ivan Bevc, film reviewer. International student film camp "Interaction" presented their films shoot and edited during the month of August 2006.

*Best Animation: "My Date From Hell", dir: Tim Weimann and Tom Bracht, Germany.
*Best Editing: "The Measure Of Things", dir: Sven Bohse, Germany.

*Award by film camp Interaction: "Isola", dir: Andreas J. Riiser, Norway.
*Midnight Cinema Award by radio BG 202: "Monologues", dir: Philipp Artus, France.
*Yugoslav Film Archive Award for best serbian film: "Beans", dir: Ivan Bukvić, Serbia.
*Special Award: "Filidor", dir: Michael Vass, Canada.

December 20 - 23, 2007

The Ninth FSF screened 39 films from 32 countries: Croatia, Germany, Slovenia, Poland, Great Britain, Georgia, Czech Rapublic, China, Romania, Italiy, Singapore, Finland, Portugal, Malesia, Denmark, France, Brazil, USA, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Australia, Spain, Argentina, Israel, Switzerland, Grecee, Ukraine, Estonia, Slovakia, Taiwan and Norway. Festival selectors were Pavle Vučkovič, awarded short films director, Tamara Stojanovć, Art History student, Dušan Petković, former Student Film Festival director and FSF Team. Festival held two workshops: "Animated Film Workshop" by Antonio Moreno, professor of animation from Brazil and "Film Music Workshop" by Vasil Hadžimanov, composer. Members of the international jury were: Antonio Moreno, Boris T. Matić, producer of the film "All For Nothing" and director of Zagreb Film Festival and Dejan Zečević, serbian film director ("The Fourth Man" and "T.T. Syndrome"). International student film camp "Interaction" presented their short documentary films shoot and edited during the month of August 2007.

*Best Fiction Film: "Shift", dir: Nico Zingelmann, Germany.
*Best Documentary Film: "How I Am", dir: Ingrid Demetz i Caroline Leitner, Italy.
*Best Animation: "Weiss" dir: Florian Grolig, Germany.
*Best Direction: "Exam", dir: Paul Negoescu, Romania.
*Best Photography: "Roads", dir: Nadav Hekselman, Israel.
*Special Award: "Salt", dir: Ana Radojičić, Serbia.
*Audience Award: "Zu-Zu Family", dir: Miroslav Mirchev, Bulgaria.
*Yugoslav Film Archive Award for best Serbian film: "During the Night", dir: Maša Nešković, Serbia.
