Italy returned to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1997, after withdrawing in 1994. Italy and RAI used the Sanremo Music Festival to select their entry, having not done so since 1972.

Their entry was Fiumi di parole, sung by Jalisse. At Eurovision, they competed 9th, and at the close of the voting had received 114 points, placing 4th of 25 countries.

Italy withdrew from the contest after this entry, and has not returned since.
