The elder son of Hugh Francis Seymour and the grandson of the

Seymour entered the
Foreign Office andDiplomatic Service in 1908. He rose to become British Minister inTehran , 1936 to 1939, AssistantUnder-Secretary of State at the Foreign Office, 1939 to 1942, and BritishAmbassador toChina , from 1942 to 1946. He retired in 1947.Marriage and children
In 1917, Seymour married Violet, daughter of Thomas Erskine, and they had one son, Hugh Francis Seymour, and two daughters. They lived at Bratton House, Bratton, Westbury,
