Cold War . TheUnited States Navy used the site for storage of its armaments for itsNorth Atlantic Squadron . The site had a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) gauge railway. Locomotives from this railway are preserved on the Almond Valley and Whipsnade railways. The weapons were taken by rail out of the site toWorkington .The large majority of the buildings and bunkers remain along with underground storage and an extensive network of storage sheds and other military buildings. The site is also home to a wide aray of wildlife including Owls and deer as the site is still fenced off with no public access. Ownership of the site was transferred from the Ministry of Defence to
Allerdale Borough Council and Cumbria County Council in 2008 who have yet to decide what to do with the site. A local farmer has had grazing rights to this site for the past 50 years, it is uncertain if they will be renewed as, despite local protests, it has been announced that mining companies have expressed an interest to turn the site into an open cast mine.=External links=
