James L. Allen (Alamo Defender)

James L. Allen (Alamo Defender)

James Lamme Allen (January 2 1815 - April 25 1901) was a deffender at the Alamo, a Private, and the last letter courier to leave the Alamo.

Background

James was born in Kentucky to Samuel Allen and Mary Lamme. His father fought in the Indian wars under General William Henry Harrison. Allen went to school at Marion College in Missouri, when he and other students left to volunteer in the Texan Army.

Alamo

James went through all of the bombardments and attacks from the army of Santa Anna from February 23 to March 5. As the legend goes between March 3 and March 5 before the final Mexican assault, Travis assembled all of the Alamo's defenders in the main plaza of the Alamo. Stating that reinforcements would not be coming, Travis withdrew his sword and drew a line in the dirt. He then told those men who were willing to stay and die with him to cross the line; those who wanted to leave could do so without shame, Allen crossed the line. In the night of March 5 James left the Alamo with a letter to Sam Houston. He did not know that a few short hours after he left Santa Anna would attack and overcome the defenders of the Alamo.

an Jacinto

Allen served at San Jacinto as a scout under Deaf Smith and helped burn Vince's Bridge which would have supplied the Mexican Army a retreating route.

Later life

After the Battle of San Jacinto James returned to the United States, where he stayed for two years. He later came back to Texas, joined the Texas Rangers, and served with Captain Ward and later Captain Peter H. Bell. He later settled in Indianola, where he served for a time as mayor and justice of the peace. In 1849 Allen married Federica M. Manchan; they raised seven children. Near the beginning of the Civil War, James was serving as tax collector of Calhoun County. At the end of the Civil War Allen refused to take the oath of allegiance when the Union soldiers took Indianola. He was placed under guard on Saluria Island, it was from there he escaped by swimming to the mainland and going to Port Lavaca. In 1865 he removed to Hochheim, where he bought a 260 acre farm. He was a Baptist and Mason. He died at his home on April 25, 1901.
