Vyborg HVDC-back-to-back station situated 9 kilometres east of Vyborg at 60°40'49"N 28°55'7"E is the only HVDC-back-to-back station in Russia.It was inaugurated in 1982 and is with a transmission rate of 1065 MW, world's largest HVDC-back-to-back facility. It has 3 bipolar systems each operating with a voltage of 85 kV. In opposite to most other HVDC plants its static inverters do not allow bidirectional energy transfer, but only from Russia to the power grid of Finland. Since the synchronisation of power grids of Eastern Europe with that of Western Europe, it offers the only possibility of Russia to export electricityto Western Europe.
