The Imraguen are an
ethnic group ortribe ofMauritania andWestern Sahara . Estimated at around 5000 in the 1970s, [Virginia Thompson and Richard Adloff, "The Western Saharans", 1980, ISBN 0-7099-0369-3, page 50] most members of the group live infishing villages on theBanc d'Arguin National Park on theAtlantic coast of Mauritania.They are believed to have
Sanhadja Berber origins, although strongly mixed withBlack African populations, mainly escapedslave s or theHaratin freedmen accepted into the tribe orBafour .Fact|date=July 2007 The name "Imraguen" itself is a Berber word meaning "fishermen".
