Georgian authorities claimed that, besides the declared blockade mission, the Russian task force was actually landing 4,000 troops and armored vehicles in Ochamchira to support an attack against Georgian troops deployed at Kodori Gorge. A missile attack was launched against an inland target by the Russian cruiser "Moskva". ["The landing force consisted of 4000 military personnel, battle tanks and other military hardware have been disembarked by the Russian Black Sea Fleet vessels in port of Ochamchira. The personnel have advanced towards the Kodori Gorge and attacked territory controlled by the Georgian side, while the battle tanks and other military hardware have advanced towards Senaki; he guided missile cruiser has committed missile attack on Kodori." The battle

According to Black Sea Fleet officials, elements of the Georgian Navy consisting of two missile boats and two auxiliary craft breached the "security zone", as originally imposed by the Russian Navy. The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that, after two sorties by the Georgians against the Russian fleet, the Russian units retaliated with naval gunfire, sinking one of the attacking boats and forcing the remaining three Georgian warships to withdraw towards the port of Poti. Georgian sources remain silent about the engagement, but Abkhazian officials confirmed the action. The latter claim has since been denied, with Russia reporting that the vessel sunk in action was the P-21 patrol boat "Giorgi Toreli", which "disappeared from the surface" within minutes . [cite web
