Like many other activities, coloring-in has gone digital. There are many children's software products which either incorporate or are dedicated to coloring in.

Features of Coloring Book Software typically include...

  • A selection of outline images to color in.
  • A color palette, ranging from 8 to unlimited colors.
  • A flood fill that fills the entire colored in area.
  • The ability to save, print and email pictures.

More advanced Coloring Books may also include...

  • Color mixing.
  • Paint-brush tools.
  • Additional drawing tools.
  • Import of own pictures.

Freeware Coloring Books

There are a small number of freeware Coloring Books. For the most part these are simpler than their shareware rivals.

Shareware

Most shareware Coloring Books come with a small number of pictures. The full version will normally include a much larger selection of pictures and is typically priced around US$10–$20.

On-line Coloring Books

There is a large number of sites that allow online coloring in (via Java applets). There is a great variety of such applets. Most offer fairly simple features such as choosing of a color and flood-fill.

More recently, Java has begun to make way to more fully featured Rich Internet Application (RIA) versions of coloring books.

Downloadable Coloring Book Pages

There are many sites on the internet now that include downloadable coloring pages. These pages are usually presented as images (such as GIF) or in the form of documents (typically PDF).
