Walton Centre

The Walton Centre NHS Trust is a hospital in Fazakerley, Liverpool, England. It is the UK's only NHS Trust for neuroscience and neurosurgery. It provides services in neurology, neurosurgery and pain relief and carries out research in these fields. The Walton Centre achieved NHS Trust status in 1992. It serves a population of approximately 3.5 million people from the Merseyside, North West, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man catchment area. The model of care operated by The Centre, aims to ensure that the benefits of highly specialised care are taken as close as possible to the homes of the patients.

Many of the Consultants deliver clinics in a large number of satellite hospitals throughout the geographical area that the hospital serves.

The wards in the hospital are all named after pioneering neurosurgeons in the 20th & 21st Century.

The Walton Centre is in the top four NHS Hospitals in the UK for purchasing and I.T. systems.

There have been allegations that a surgeon at the hospital removed brain tissue for research purposes without the patient's consent. The samples were used to test a new treatment for brain diseases on which the surgeon was joint owner of the patent. In 2006, the hospital was identified as "the most dangerous hospital in Merseyside and Cheshire for health workers".
