cities =Walloon Lake is the headwater for the Bear River located in Charlevoix and Emmet counties in
Northern Michigan . Theglacier -formed lake has had a rich history. It once housed twosawmill s and the surrounding wood was used to help buildChicago andDetroit . It quickly became a prime vacation spot for many. A long lake steamer or train ride was followed by steam ferry rides that took vacationers to their cabins. The childhood summer home of
Ernest Hemingway is located on the north shore of Walloon Lake. The house is still kept in the Hemingway family.Walloon Lake was originally named Talcott. After a local butcher, J. R. Haas, saw the name Walloon Lake on an old railroad map, he tried to discover the history behind the name. A group of people called the Walloons, from Belgium, settled the land at the north end of the lake, which was then called Bear Lake. No trace of this family has ever been located. But the name Walloon Lake has remained.
The lake has 30 miles of shoreline and is shape like the figure of a woman. You may hear locals refer to their cottages on the west arm, or the foot, etc. Today, the once rustic shoreline of the lake is being populated with a great many large homes as real-estate value has increased rapidly since the 1970s. There are two camps on the lake: Camp Daggett and Camp Michigania, the University of Michigan's Alumni Association camp. The lake is widely noted for its excellent swimming, boating, sailing and fishing.
The lake covers convert|4270|acre|km2|1 and is primarily fed from
groundwater . Its deepest hole is just over convert|100|ft|m|abbr=on deep. Recently, a foreign introduction ofzebra mussel s has made the clear waters even clearer. For a few months after the ice melts (usually in April), it is possible to see to the bottom of the lake at depths up to twenty feet. Unfortunately, this clarity causes certain underwater vegetation to grow explosively, which clogs the lake as part of the Zebra Mussel's life cycle.ources
