National Nurses Organizing Committee
- National Nurses Organizing Committee
The National Nurses Organizing Committee is a labor union and professional association of registered nurses that was formed by the California Nurses Association to organize registered nurses and to advocate for improved patient care and progressive public health policy outside of the state of California.
In May 2005, registered nurses working at health facilities in Cook County, IL voted to sever ties with the Illinois Nurses Association (INA), which had been their bargaining representative, and to join the NNOC. These nurses became the first bargaining unit within the NNOC.
Unions affiliated or allied with the INA denounced the NNOC organizing campaign as an unethical "raid" on another union's membership. However, the Illinois Labor Relations Board, the public entity that oversaw the voting process, declared that the nurses' vote was 60%-40% in favor of NNOC, and INA leaders admitted to the press that there had been deficiencies in the INA's representation of the Cook County RNs.
