Kitka

Kitka is an Oakland, California-based all-female vocal ensemble focused on "Eastern European women’s vocal traditions"cite web | url=http://www.kitka.org/about/index.html | title=About Kitka | accessdate=2008-08-11] .

Founded as an offshoot of the Westwind International Folk Ensemble in 1979, Kitka began as a group of amateur singers. By 1981, under musical director Bon Singer, the group became a professional organization. In 1989 they released their first album, "Kitka", a compilation of live recordings. Their first studio album, "Voices on the Eastern Wind" was released in 1992.

In addition to performances and recordings, Kitka gives vocal workshops as well as community-service and in-school programs. The group maintains its ties with Eastern Europe by travelling there on many occasions to perform and collect repertoire.
