Kitka is an
Oakland, California -based all-female vocal ensemble focused on "Eastern European women’s vocal traditions"cite web | url=http://www.kitka.org/about/index.html | title=About Kitka | accessdate=2008-08-11] .Founded as an offshoot of the
Westwind International Folk Ensemble in 1979, Kitka began as a group of amateur singers. By 1981, under musical directorBon Singer , the group became a professional organization. In 1989 they released their first album, "Kitka", a compilation of live recordings. Their first studio album, "Voices on the Eastern Wind" was released in 1992.In addition to performances and recordings, Kitka gives vocal workshops as well as community-service and in-school programs. The group maintains its ties with Eastern Europe by travelling there on many occasions to perform and collect repertoire.
