Grandage Edwards Powell

Grandage Edwards Powell was an Anglican Bishop in the second quarter of the 20th century. Born on 20 November 1882 into a clerical family [His father was the "Rev Astell Drayner Powell" sometime Canon of Manchester Cathedral >“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] and educated at Rugby and University College, Oxford, he was ordained in 1906. After curacies in Fallowfield and Blackburn [During which time he married "Madeline Mary Allen", by whom he had two sons>Who was Who (Ibid)] he rose rapidly in the Church hierarchy becoming successively Vicar of "St Matthew’s, West Kensington" [ [http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/A2A/records.aspx?cat=074-p80mtw&cid=-1&Gsm=2008-06-18 History of church within National Archives] ] , Rural Dean of Leicester and Archdeacon of Carlisle. After four years in Cumberland he was raised to the Episcopate as the Suffragan Bishop of Penrith ["Suffragan Bishoprics- Appointments To Penrith And Bedford" The Times Tuesday, Dec 20, 1938; pg. 14; Issue 48182; col C ] . He resigned after a serious illness in April 1944 [The Times, Monday, Apr 03, 1944; pg. 6; Issue 49821; col G "Ecclesiastical News Bishop Powell to resign"] and died on 5 March 1948.
