Forrest classification

Forrest classification

Forrest classification - is a classification of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage used for purposes of comparison and in selecting patients for endoscopic treatment [http://books.google.com/books?id=e0FDyiGTwM8C&pg=PA151&dq=Forrest+hemorrhage&ei=fwSgSPTjOoiQjgHk3rj7BA&sig=ACfU3U35XabLLmD_cag2vP4Uz-WPmUk1bA]

Forrest clasification

Acute hemorrhage
*Forrest I a (Spurting hemorrhage)
*Forrest I b (Oozing hemorrhage)

Signs of recent hemorrhage
*Forrest II a (Visible vessel)
*Forrest II b (Adherent clot)
*Forrest II c (Hematin on ulcer base)

Lesins without active bleeding

*Forrest III (Lesions without signs of recent hemorrhage) [http://www.endoskopischer-atlas.de/m06ae.htm]

Application

Forrest classification is instrumental when stratifying patients with upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage into high and low risk categories for mortality. It is also a significant method of prediction of the risk of rebleeding and very often is used for valuation of theendoscopic intervention modalitiescite web|url=http://www.medfak.ni.ac.yu/amm/2007-html/4-broj/SIGNIFICANCE%20OF%20FORREST%20CLASSIFICATION%20ROCKALLS%20AND%20BLATCHFORDS%20RISK%20....pdf|title=SIGNIFICANCE OF FORREST CLASSIFICATION, ROCKALL’S AND BLATCHFORD’S RISK SCORING SYSTEM IN PREDICTION OF REBLEEDING IN PEPTIC ULCER DISEASE|last=Hadzibulic|first=Edvin |coauthors=Svjetlana Govedarica|accessdate=2008-08-11] . A prospective controlled study carried out by Dr. Walter Heldwein, J. Schreiner, José Pedrazzoli Júnior, P.Lehnhert at Medizinische Klinik Innenstadt der Universität München revealed that "Forrest criteria are essential for proper planning of endoscopic therapy and urgent surgery in bleeding peptic ulcers"cite journal|author=Heldwein W|coauthors= Schreiner J, Pedrazzoli J, Lehnert P|date=Nov 21, 1989|title=Is the Forrest classification a useful tool for planning endoscopic therapy of bleeding peptic ulcers?|journal=Endoscopy|volume=21(6)|pages=258-62|url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2693077] .
