"Hometown Girl" is the debut album from American
country music artistMary Chapin Carpenter . It was released on July 30, 1987 (see1987 in country music ) onColumbia Records . The album did not produce any chart singles.Vik Iyengar of
Allmusic gave the album a two-and-a-half star rating out of five, saying that although it "her songwriting skills are apparent" on the album, it did not contain as many "rollicking" tunes as Carpenter's following albums. [Allmusic (see infobox)] The "Washington Post " gave it a more favorable review, saying that her own songs "were more than strong enough" to carry the record.cite web |url=http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/washingtonpost_historical/access/123945412.html?dids=123945412:123945412&FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&date=JUL+26%2C+1987&author=&pub=The+Washington+Post&desc=Mary+Chapin+Carpenter%3A+%27Hometown+Girl%27&pqatl=google |title=Mary Chapin Carpenter: "Hometown Girl" |accessdate=2008-08-10 |date=1987-07-26 |work=Washington Post]Carpenter herself noted that, although the album did not sell well, it received a following on
public radio due to her folk-oriented style, and her music was popular at colleges. However, it did not make the final cut, and was instead recorded by
Rosanne Cash on her 1987 album "King's Record Shop ".Track listing
