Dragonmount

Dragonmount is a fictional location in Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series of novels. It is a colossal mountain in the vicinity of the island-city of Tar Valon, close enough that its shadow brushes the city each evening.

It was created during the The Breaking of the World by Lews Therin Telamon, also known as the Dragon, after the taint of saidin and the influence of Ishamael (Elan Morin Tedronai, a Forsaken) drove him insane. It is not known exactly how Lews Therin Telamon created the mountain. All that can be known for sure from the Prologue of the The Eye of the World, is that he used saidin and in the process killed himself. In The Gathering Storm it is Rand, remembering Lews Therin Telamon's death, realised that Dragonmount was a direct result of the Dragon's suicide.

It is also stated in the Karaethon Cycle that the Dragon Reborn will be born on the slopes of Dragonmount. At the end of the Aiel War, Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn was born on the slope of Dragonmount to a dying Aiel Maiden of the Spear during the Battle of the Shining Walls, also known as the Blood Snow. The first person to be aware of his birth (other than Tigraine Mantear/Shaiel) was the Aes Sedai, Gitara Moroso who Foretold his birth with her final breath, in the presence of the then Amyrlin Tamra Ospenya, Moiraine Damodred, and Siuan Sanche.

Due to several references to smoke rising from Dragonmount's peak, and rumbling coming from inside the mountain, it is likely that Lews Therin's "creation" is an active or dormant volcano. The mountain's black slopes are said to be littered with the bones of those who have tried to reach its summit, though none have made it to the mountain's jagged top.

Its stunning peak dominates the landscape for miles, and is said to dwarf the White Tower of Tar Valon.
