Saboba Chereponi

Saboba Chereponi

Saboba Chereponi is a district of Ghana in the Northern Region of Ghana in north-east Ghana, bordering Togo. The area is 3439 km², with a population of approaching 120,000. The harmatan winds carry fine dust, from the end of November through the end of March. Dry heat follows until the rainy season of June to October when sudden, torrential rains flood the area. There is often reduced rainfall, which hinders hydroelectric production, and causes frequent rolling blackouts.

Due to poor soil and lack of water, farming is difficult and irrigation is not regularly practiced. Subsistence farming and rural poverty is the norm for the majority of the population. In this savannah region, hot grasslands with scattered scrub trees are the norm. Summer daytime temperatures may reach 45 °C with regularity. Average monthly temperatures range from 25 to 35 °C.

The majority of the people living in this region call themselves the Anufo, or Chokosi, descendants of a warrior people who were invited by a Ghanaian king as mercenaries and who have stayed ever since. The ethno-linguistic group stretches across the top of several West African countries, and local travel to Togo is common. People commonly speak Chokosi as well as other Ghanaian languages and English. Christianity, Muslim are the common religions but ancestor worship is still evident.

Major population centers include Chereponi and Saboba, the capital of the district. Transportation to Saboba and Chereponi is available from Yendi. Roads are poor and may wash out during the rainy season.

[ActionAid] , Saboba's Hope, Inc/, World Vision and World Servants are international organization operating in the village. Cell phone service came to the area in October 2005. There is no public internet service yet.

Visitors should be aware of the dangers of dehydration, malaria, typhoid and other local ailments. There are few tourist attractions in the region. Visitors should introduce themselves to the local chief as well as chief of police.

Health care is provided at the Saboba Medical Centre the district regional healthcare facility.

Saboba, the capital of the region, has guesthouses available for visitors.
