The 1979-80 was the thirteenth season in North Stars history. Former Barons player Al MacAdamled the team in scoring with 93 points and captured the Bill Masterton Trophy. The North Stars post their first winning record in 7 years as they finished in third place. In the playoffs, the North Stars shocked the hockey world by eliminating the 4-time Stanley Cup Champions Montreal Canadiens in seven games. The upset earned the North Stars a trip to the semifinals.
