"Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse" is a video game released for the Mega Drive/Genesis produced by Sega of America. It was amongst the second wave of games for the platform and helped to seal the console's reputation in the period leading up to the release of Sonic the Hedgehog.

The game is a side-scrolling game putting the player in control of Mickey Mouse in a magical quest to save Minnie Mouse from the evil witch Mizrabel (a pun on "miserable"). Each level exists within a large magical castle and the player must defeat enemies and bosses by jumping and butt-stomping on them, or collecting apples, or marbles to use as projectiles. The player can also collect icons to increase health, collect extra lives, or gain bonus points.

After defeating a boss, the player is given a gem. When all seven gems are collected, the player can build a rainbow bridge that allows him/her to walk into the castle's tower for a final battle with the wicked witch.

"Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse" was also released for the Game Gear and Sega Master System with redesigned levels, though the game mechanics are similar from the Genesis/Mega Drive version.

Suggestions were made to Sega to re-release this game as well the other related Mickey Mouse Sega games as a compilation much like their release of the Sonic Mega Collection, but all suggestions were ignored despite its enormous popularity amongst retro gamers and Mickey Mouse fans.Fact|date=April 2008 It is still unknown as of yet whether this game will make an appearance on the Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console.

Reception

ACE called the Game Gear version "basically an unadulerated Mario clone — and not a bad one at that", giving it a score of 810 out of 1000. [Citation | last= Whitta | first= Gary | year= 1991 | periodical= ACE | publisher= EMAP | issue= 47 (August) | pages= 72 ]
