Željko Bogut was born in the
Mostar . He learned to play chess as a five-year-old, and became an active chess player in 1994 when he started playing forHšk Zrinjski Mostar . His first major win was becoming the first in Herzegovina in 1987. He played forHšk Zrinjski Mostar until 1997. During that time, he was the champion ofHerzeg-Bosnia in 1995 and tied for the first place in the same contest in 1996. The same year he won an international tournament inBiel and in 1997 he won the Open Tournament H-B in Mostar. In 1997 he changed toŠk Široki Brijeg , for whom he also plays today. From 1997 on, he won the Open Tournament ofDubrovnik in 2003 and became the champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He won a lot of fast-paced tournaments playing both forHšk Zrinjski Mostar andŠk Široki Brijeg . He also took part in twoChess Olympiad s, inCalviá andTurin , playing for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Except for playing inŠk Široki Brijeg he has also opened a chess school. He currently has 2464 points on the ELO list (as of October 2008), which is 1 point less than his best result in April 2008.Playing style

Bogut is married and has 4 children. His occupation is lawyer and he works in the county archive in
