Željko Bogut (born October 8 1969 in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina) is a chess player for Bosnia and Herzegovina and former Bosnian champion. In september 2006 he became the champion preceded title by Milan Vukić and succeeded it by Predrag Nikolić in september 2007.

Biography

Željko Bogut was born in the Mostar. He learned to play chess as a five-year-old, and became an active chess player in 1994 when he started playing for Hšk Zrinjski Mostar. His first major win was becoming the first in Herzegovina in 1987. He played for Hšk Zrinjski Mostar until 1997. During that time, he was the champion of Herzeg-Bosnia in 1995 and tied for the first place in the same contest in 1996. The same year he won an international tournament in Biel and in 1997 he won the Open Tournament H-B in Mostar. In 1997 he changed to Šk Široki Brijeg, for whom he also plays today. From 1997 on, he won the Open Tournament of Dubrovnik in 2003 and became the champion of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He won a lot of fast-paced tournaments playing both for Hšk Zrinjski Mostar and Šk Široki Brijeg. He also took part in two Chess Olympiads, in Calviá and Turin, playing for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Except for playing in Šk Široki Brijeg he has also opened a chess school. He currently has 2464 points on the ELO list (as of October 2008), which is 1 point less than his best result in April 2008.

Bogut is married and has 4 children. His occupation is lawyer and he works in the county archive in Široki Brijeg.
