John Davies Evans (born 1925) [cite LAF|id=n50-10869] is an English
archaeologist and academic, renown for his research into the prehistory of theMediterranean , and especially the prehistoric cultures ofMalta . He is a former Director of theInstitute of Archaeology inLondon , a position he held from 1975 until his retirement in 1989. During his directorship the Institute—the largest archaeology department in the UK and one of the largest in the world—was reorganised from a separate institution within theUniversity of London to one affiliated withUniversity College London , in 1986.During the 1940s and 1950s Evans excavated a number of the significant Megalithic sites in Malta.
