The 1st is one of the few ancestrally Republican districts in the South; it has been in Republican hands continuously since 1881, and Republican nomination is almost always tantamount to election.In a district known for giving its congressmen very long tenures in Washington, Roe has promised to serve only 10 years (five terms) in the House.
