John Jules Barrish (30 July 1885 - 7 March 1939) was an Irish writer and philosopher. Born in Cork, he moved across Ireland for the main part of his life, only to return to Cork on his late years and died there.

As an unprofitable writer, he was never sufficiently published to be well-known. Without much success, Barrish wrote a work of only one fiction and two philosophic reflection. His biggest work is unquestionably his encyclopedia of the cinema named "Cinema and Metaphor", in four volumes, in which he developped theories about the behavior of the spectator in front of the very new entertainment of the time.

The recent publication of the work "Metaphors of the contemporary cinema" (2004), collective work of several theorists gathered, supervised by Jules Barrish seems to be a tribute to John J. Barrish, the editor's name used as a simple pen name.
